He's here! Woo hoo!!!!

Can you tell I'm excited? The "he" I'm referring to is our new clouded leopard, Rama. He is now officially out of quarantine and has arrived in our building. I am so excited I can hardly stand it! :)

Here are some pictures of our new boy. These were taken when he was still sedated for the transport. He was up and walking around by this afternoon and ate a little bit food from me around 330.

If I'm really lucky, he'll settle in enough that I can get some pictures of him on exhibit. We'll see. This species of cat is notoriously shy so who knows...

Also, here's a (not so good) picture of his teeth. These cats have the longest teeth to body size ratio than any other cat, excluding the now extinct saber-tooth cat.

Anyways, I just had to share the excitement! He is just too cool!

Japans slaughter of dolphins

The following was brought to my attention by an online friend of mine.

Help stop the slaughter of Japan's dolphins. The first link below leads to footage of the dolphin slaughter. It is shocking, be aware of that before you watch it. The second leads to an online petition requesting the stop of the slaughter.

1) Video
2) Petition

And yes, I have both seen the video and signed the petition.

For further information on this tragedy, visit here. This site provides more details on the slaughter (without the video).

I encourage everyone to visit the sites, learn about what's happening and, if you are inclined, sign the petition.

Rodeo Time

So....It's that time again....The Rodeo has come and gone. It was here for three weeks and pretty much turned the town upside down...as usual! This was my first year going to the Livestock and Show and Rodeo...I know, I know, I've lived her for 4 years and have only just now made it to one of the largest events in this city. What can I say? Anyways, a friend and I chose two concerts we wanted to see - Sugarland and Rascal Flatts. How it works is that your ticket to the concert (ranging from $16 to $300) gets you into the Livestock Show, the Rodeo and the concert. The concert is pretty much done to insure that people show up at the Rodeo.... :)

Well...I liked the rodeo - no one was seriously injured, which is always a good thing. They had all the major sports - calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, bareback bronc, saddle broncs, bull riding and barrel racing. Let me tell you, some of those guys are GOOD! One guy wrestled the steer in 3.7 seconds...That's from the gate, off the horse and the steer on the ground....Very impressive.

The Sugarland concert was good. I would definitely go see them again. The Rascal Flatts concert, however, was cancelled. We were bummed but they were replaced by three artists - Joe Nichols, Jack Ingram and Clay Walker. These guys were gracious enough to fill in for Rascal Flatts at the last minute when the lead singer - Gary Levox - came down with severe bronchitis. Clay Walker had already done a concert at the Rodeo on Mar 3 and Jack Ingram flew in from New York that day to do it. I'm not sure where Joe Nichols was at. He may have already been in town, or nearby.

I will gladly go see Clay Walker and Joe Nichols again. I would love to see them perform at a "true" concert - as opposed to one that's after the rodeo. Jack Ingram....probably not. He played 6 or 7 songs and I only recognized 3 of them...and I just didn't care for his performance. I still liked the songs I recognized but he just didn't impress me otherwise. I recognized all of Joe Nichols' songs and all but one of Clay Walker's. And the one I didn't recognize of Clay Walker's was a new one that hadn't been released yet.

The one down side to all of this was that, in between each artist, they had to break down the last artist set and put up a new one. This took about 20-30 minutes each time...The concerts at Rodeo usually last about an hour and start after the rodeo ends (usually around 9/930 pm on weeknights). We didn't get out of there until 1130 p.m. - and then we had to catch the Metrorail to the zoo and then drive home. We got home around 1 a.m. I, luckily, didn't have to work the next day but my friend did. She got about 3 1/2 hours sleep...and she had the closing shift...She was *really* tired by the time she got home that night.

All in all, though, it was a fun experience. And we now know what we're going to do for next year - 'cause we're definitely going to go again. :)

Dang....

For those of you who do not know, I volunteer at a low cost spay/neuter clinic in La Marque Texas. Well, when I started volunteering last July, there was one vet, three techs, a receptionist and a clinic manager - and we only did spay/neuters. Now, we have 2 vets, 5 techs, 2 receptionists and a clinic manager - and now we're also running a wellness clinic. It's amazing to see how much it's grown in the 7 months I've been there. The staff are awesome and I enjoy going down and spending my Friday mornings there - even if it is hard to get up and get moving on my day off. When I see how much my help is appreciated, it makes it all worthwhile. Today, they did between 70 and 80 surgeries - and I have no idea how many people Jason ended up seeing in the wellness clinic. This is obviously a service that is needed here.

And let me tell you, it's a whole 'nother routine when there are *two* vets doing surgeries! I'd leave the back area to go check on the laundry and I'd come back to 3-4 packs needing to be washed, rinsed and repackaged. They kept me busy today. And I loved every minute of it! :)
If anyone is interested in learning more about the clinic go to the Saving Animals website and click on Animal Alliance Spay-Neuter Clinic. And while your there, why don't you check out all the other great things this group is doing?

Grab the tissues...

This slideshow was put together by Bob James, the archivist for Ridgeback Rescue of the US. It is truly heartwarming to see just how many dogs this wonderful group of people have saved. I should be so lucky as to come back as an RRUS dog. Click on the link below to see the show!

Second Chances

Oh yeah, you will need Adobe Acrobat in order to view it. Enjoy (and keep the box of tissues handy, you will need them...)

And while your at it....why don't you head over to RRUS's homepage and see if there's a companion waiting for you...or perhaps, you may want to volunteer your time to the cause...

The loss of a keeper and the loss of a cat...

My condolences to the family and friends of the zoo keeper who was killed by the jaguar yesterday at the Denver Zoo. My condolences as well to the Denver Zoo community as a whole.

If you wish to see the Denver Zoo's press releases go here: http://www.denverzoo.org/about/news.asp

They are all posted on their site.

This is a double tragedy. Jorge, the jaguar, was an import from the Santa Cruz Zoo in Bolivia. His genetics were not represented at all in the US captive populate. Not only did we lose a zoo keeper and a beautiful cat, but we also lost the chance to introduce a new bloodline in the captive jaguar population in the US.

Everyone...Please please please be careful.

Boomer....

Realized I hadn't posted a picture of Boomer in awhile, so here ya go! Ain't he handsome?!

He's enjoying having another person in the house. And Megan loves to give him lots and lots and lots of attention! Talk about a spoiled bird.... :)
